Buyers Guide

How Do I Know Which Hot Tub Is Right For Me?

There is a lot to consider in selecting your hot tub; it is an investment in relaxation and wellbeing after all!

You might want to consider, the number of people who will be using the hot tub regularly and whether you would prefer one or two loungers. Based on the same jet pumps a hot tub with more massaging jets offers a more relaxing, soothing massage whereas one with fewer jets offers a more vigorous massage as the water pressure is split over fewer jets.

To give you one less thing to consider, all our hot tubs come with the added features like Bluetooth Speakers and LED lights to bring your hot tub experience to life.

If you are unsure or would like some expert advice, speak to our friendly sales team over the phone or in the showroom, they will be able to advise you on the best hot tub to suit your needs and to offer the spa experience you are looking for.

How Much Will It Cost To Run The Hot Tub?

The running costs will be dependent on a large range of factors including how often you use the hot tub, your preferred water temperature alongside the surrounding location and temperatures. Your electrical tariff will also have an impact. Unfortunately, if your hot tub is in an exposed windy location, there will be more heat loss (leading to higher running costs) than if located in a conservatory.

There are some companies that offer running costs of around £1 per day, but this is likely measured against on the cost of keeping the water hot; without the jets running. In other words; without you making full use of it! This means that your actual running costs would be a lot higher than expected and make it harder for you to estimate the cost in advance of purchase.

Therefore, we would never try and tell you exactly how much your hot tub will cost to run but would prefer to have an honest conversation with you (focussing on your selected hot tub, area and use) before you order so you have a better understanding of the running costs. As an estimate your weekly running cost could be between £15 – £25 per week depending on your usage and the factors above.

To give you reassurance, our hot tubs all come with an insulated lockable cover to reduce heat loss. We also recommend ordering a Spa Protector which provides additional insulation while protecting the hot tub from the elements.

What Extras or Accessories Do I Need?

Your Spa Home hot tub will come with a filter, free insulating cover and a set of steps.

The only essentials you need to buy to run your Spa Home hot tub are the chemicals to keep the water clean and clear. The Starter Chemical Pack covers the main chemicals you will need as a new hot tub owner and have clear instructions.

There are also some optional accessories that you may wish to add:

A second filter: this means you can swap the filters more regularly and allow them to dry after cleaning which improves the lifespan of both filters.
Cover lifter: this helps to remove the insulated cover in two easy movements and provides a secure space for it to rest off the ground during use. It also reduces the chance of dirt and damage to the cover.
Spa Protector: a thick, sturdy cover which offers additional insulation and protection.

Delivery And Installation

Where Should I Locate My Hot Tub?

Please check our site preparation page for the full details on setting up for your new hot tub.

The most important aspect is ensuring you have a flat and level, structurally sound surface to place your hot tub on. This is going to take the full weight of your hot tub when it is filled with water plus the occupants so ensuring there is a good support is key. A grass, gravel or soil base is not appropriate as it will shift over time and unbalance your hot tub.

Ensure there is an appropriate place to install the electrics; the isolator switch or 13amp waterproof socket needs to be 2m away from the hot tub so water cannot splash into the socket. But ensure there is easy access to all circuit breakers and RCD’s. You do not need to plumb in your hot tub but check where you will drain the water (not onto your flowerbeds!).

Access is required to (at least) the front and one side of the spa for maintenance and spa care. To reduce running costs, consider the garden layout, positioning the hot tub next to a fence or the house will reduce wind exposure and heat loss.

Otherwise, it is all down to what looks good in your garden and where gives you the best view!

Where Do You Deliver?

We offer free delivery and positioning across the UK mainland on all Spa Home hot tubs.

For any deliveries beyond the UK mainland an independent courier may be required and there will be additional charges. Please get in touch with us on 01246 808088 and we can advise based on your location.

What Access Do You Need To Be Able To Delivery My Hot Tub?

We will deliver your hot tub on its side using a hot tub sled. The hot tub will be delivered on its side using a hot tub sled. Please be aware the sled has a wide turning circle and there cannot be any obstacles between the drop off and installation points.

As the tub will be delivered on its side and will have protective packaging, it will require the width of any gates or pathways to be, at least, the tub depth plus 100mm. The minimum height of any roofs, gates or branches must be 350mm in addition to tub length/width.

If there is a sharp turn on the route then we need to ensure that, with the tub on its side and therefore standing over 2 meters in length, there is enough space for the hot tub to turn safely with an engineer at either end to guide the tub through. Please take measurements of all widths to judge the turn, ideally need a 3-meter turn. The tub needs to be straight before moving forward.

For example: If the hot tub depth is 780mm the width of any passages or gates must be at least 880mm. If the hot tub length is 2000mm the height of any gates, doors or gutters must be at least 2350mm.

There are full details on access routes available on our site preparation page.

I Do Not Have Access From The Road To My Garden, How Can A Hot Tub Be Installed?

We require a minimum access of 10cm plus the hot tub depth for any passageways. If you do not have good access or there is a fence or steps preventing access, then a crane may be the best way of safely installing your hot tub.

We ask you to arrange your own crane as it allows you to use a local, reputable company and, if necessary, for them to visit the site ahead of time to conduct a survey.

What Do I Need To Do To Prepare For Installation?

Ahead of installation please ensure you have:

Read the Site Preparation details.
Arranged for the appropriate electrics to be installed.
Set up the hot tub’s final position.
Completed the Pre-Delivery Check (this will be emailed to you once your order is complete).
Removed any obstacles requested by our Pre-Delivery Team.
Uploaded your site access photos ensuring the full route and any obstacles are included.
Either paid the full balance of the hot tub or signed the finance agreement.
Please be aware you will need to provide a suitable cable (as described in the site preparation documents), which is long enough to reach from the electrical box / socket to the hot tub site and around the hot tub to the control panels location. For 13amp hot tubs, ensure there is a plug on the far end of the cable and for 32amp hot tubs, your electrician should wire this into the isolator switch.

Will You Set Up My Hot Tub?

We offer three delivery packages:

Maintenance

How Much Water Should I Put In My Hot Tub?

Always fill your hot tub using a garden hose through the filter compartment, to avoid the chance of an airlock. Fill until the water level is between the highest jet in the seats and the bottom of the headrests.

If several people enter the hot tub, the water level will rise; if this reaches the middle of the headrests, some people may find it hard to keep their heads above the water level. If this happens, simply drain some of the water to reduce the water level below the bottom of the headrests.

How Do I Maintain My Hot Tub?

We recommend an annual service to ensure your hot tub stays in great condition and pre-empt any potential issues. While our hot tubs are designed to run all year round, if you are not planning on using your hot tub during the winter, our winter shut down service offers a full maintenance and fully empties the hot tub for the winter.

For daily maintenance, check and balance the chemicals in your hot tub to ensure it is safe and hygienic to use. Every couple of weeks (depending on hot tub usage) wipe down the sides and cover then clean the filter with filter cleaner, following the instructions on the pack. To prolong the life of your filter, leave it to fully dry before further use.

Every 3 months, depending on usage, drain your hot tub entirely and clean inside of the hot tub before refilling and re-balancing the chemicals. To help prevent an airlock in the tub, always fill by putting the hosepipe into the filter compartment.

Booking A Service

We recommend booking an annual service to ensure all the parts are in good working order, check for any leaks or maintenance issues such as scale build up. Our engineers will also leave your hot tub sparkling clean and advise on chemical use and maintenance.

If you are planning on draining your hot tub over the winter, book a Winter Service and the engineer will also fully drain your hot tub to prevent any pipes freezing over the winter.

Electrical Set Up and Safety

Do you offer 13 or 32amp Hot Tubs?

We offer both 13 and 32amp hot tubs. The 13amp hot tubs are simply plugged into a waterproof outdoor socket while the 32amp hot tubs must be hard wired into an isolator switch which is then connected to the main consumer box.

Both 13 and 32amp hot tubs should be connected with a steel wire armoured cable to prevent any damage to the cable and the socket or isolator switch should be 2-3m from the hot tub.

What Electrical Set Up Is Required For My Hot Tub

The full details of the electrical set up for both 13 and 32amp hot tubs is on our site preparation page. A qualified electrician is required to install the electrical supply to you hot tub.

Chemicals And Water Quality

What Do I Have To Do To Maintain The Hot Tub Water?

Prior to each use of the hot tub, use test strips to measure the chemical level of the water. Simply dip in the water and compare the strip to the coloured square. Adjust, if necessary, by adding small amounts of chemicals to the water, then wait 5 minutes and run the jets to mix the water before retesting until the chemical levels match.

Always shower before you enter the hot tub as any makeup, perfumes, moisturisers, shampoos, or swat will contaminate the hot tub. By washing these off before you enter, the hot tub water will remain cleaner and clearer for longer. In particular, avoid fake tan as it risks staining the shell and filters and wash your swim wear without detergent. Contaminants, incorrect cleaning products can cause foam in the water of your hot tub, this can be remedied with by adding a capful of Anti Foam.

On a weekly basis, add water clarifier to help clean the build up of soaps and lotions that build up from the hot tub use. For any build-up of dirt around the waterline, use a surface cleaner on a weekly basis.

If you live in a hard water area, limescale can build up in the pipes and jets. Over time this can reduce the flow of water through the pumps increasing the chance of a failure. Periodic use of an anti-scale can clear the build-up.

How Often Do I Need To Change The Water?

Your hot tub water will last around 3 months of daily hot tub use if the chemicals are used correctly to maintain the cleanliness and clarity. To prolong the lifespan of the water, regularly clean the filter and cover.

Are There Alternatives To Using Chlorine?

Sanitising chemicals are essential to maintain the cleanliness, clarity, and pH levels of the hot tub water, otherwise bacteria will build up.

Chlorine is the more commonly used sanitiser for hot tubs but if you prefer or have a sensitivity to chlorine, bromine is a great alternative. Both come in a granule form which dissolves easily in the hot tub water. Just ensure you check the chemical balance before each use to ensure that it is balance and safe to use.

If you have any questions about choosing, maintaining, or ordering our hot tubs, please call our friendly team of hot tub experts and we will help create your perfect home spa experience.
